Biography

Dr. Sides is currently Professor and Associate Head of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his B.S.Ch.E. from the University of Utah in 1973 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1981 after which he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon. He is a member of the Electrochemical Society, the American Chemical Society, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has published over sixty articles in three research areas: electrochemical engineering, growth of advanced materials, and colloid and interfacial science. In the former, he did basic research on electrolytic gas evolution, transport phenomena and kinetics of aluminum reduction, and corrosion of magnetic materials for high density recording with both flexible and rigid media. In the materials area, he worked on growth and characterization of CdTe and CdZnTe by Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition. He has one patent issued on an optical method for fly height measurement for disk drives and one patent pending on a new zeta potential measurement technique. Currently he conducts research on electrohydrodynamic flows, measurement of zeta potential, and enantiospecific adsorption. He founded a company, ZetaMetrix Inc, in 2006. Dr. Sides received a Fulbright Fellowship to lecture in the USSR and spent six months sabbatical leave at HITACHI Central Research Laboratory.

Research Interests

Professor Sides investigates topics in electrochemistry, electrochemical engineering, colloid science, and solid-state materials.

Collaborating with Dennis Prieve, Professor Sides investigates forces that move microparticles laterally on electrodes when electric fields are applied normally to the electrolyte/electrode interface. While most investigators have concentrated on observing the in-plane motion, Prof. Sides and Prof. Prieve have been using Total Internal Reflection Microscopy to measure the out-of-plane motion, seeking clues to complex direct and induced forces that move the particles.

Professor Sides is also developing a novel instrument based on a rotating disk for quick and convenient determination of the zeta potential of macroscopic (> 1 mm significant dimension) surfaces.

Finally, Professor Sides collaborates with Prof. Gellman in an investigation of enantiospecific adsorption of amino acids on chiral mineral surfaces. Prof. Sides and Prof. Gellman are exploring the adsorption of amino acids in both UHV and in aqueous phases to characterize the potential of natural single crystal mineral surfaces to act as enantioselective agents.

Highlights of 2008

Research
In 2008, the promise of the ZetaSpin instrument for measuring zeta potential began to show in scientific results. Unique data and theory related to the process of charging the mica surface was published. Always before, scientists had studied the equilibrium properties of mica in aqueous solution. Use of the ZetaSpin makes exploration of the first 60 seconds of exposure of a solid to a liquid possible. The theory required to take advantage of this new type of experimentwas developed.

Experiments demonstrated that zeta potential might be sensitive to enantiospecific adsorption, meaning that measurement of zeta potential of a chiral surface can distinguish whether that surface is in the presence of the right handed enantiomer of a chiral compound, or in the presence of the left handed enantiomer of the same chiral compound.

A new way of presenting zeta potential data was formulated. Subtracting each subsequent data point from the first in a series of measurements, in which the chemistry of the solution is changed in some progressive manner, such as increasing salt concentration or changing pH, substantially improves the reproducibility of zeta potential measurements. Furthermore, this transformation reveals the dependence of the measurement on the intrinsic chemistry.

Education
During the spring semester of 2008, Prof. Sides and Mr. Matt Cline and gave students in a junior level engineering laboratory course an assignment over spring break to invent a product or process having a theme of the laboratory, which was momentum, heat, and mass transport. The students responded enthusiastically with inventions ranging from an improved hookah to a way to use parking lots as solar thermal collectors. The approach is called "Invention Based Learning".

Recognition

  • PPG and Virginia Tech purchased ZetaSpin instruments to help them in their work on adsorption of nanoparticles.

  • Invited to give a talk in a special session about novel instrumentation at an international meeting at Columbia in June 2009.

  • Invited talk with honorarium as part of a special lecture series at Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials.

  • Invention Based Learning attracted local media on the day of the poster session and a report about it was broadcast several times in the subsequent 24 hour news cycle on WTAE in Pittsburgh. The national chemical engineering magazine "Chemical Engineering Progress" heard about this and included a description of it in their February 2009 issue on education.

New Job Description
Professor Sides became Associate Head of Chemical Engineering in August 2008.
