Biography

Lorenz T. (Larry) Biegler is the Bayer Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He joined the faculty at CMU after receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1981. Prof. Biegler was appointed as the Bayer Professor in 1996. His research is computer aided process engineering (CAPE) including flowsheet optimization, optimization of systems of differential and algebraic equations, reactor network synthesis and algorithms for constrained, nonlinear process control. Prof. Biegler has been a visiting scholar at Northwestern University, a scientist-in-residence at Argonne National Lab, a Distinguished Faculty Visitor at the University of Alberta, a Gambrinus Fellow at the University of Dortmund, a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Heidelberg and a Distinguished Jubilee Lecturer at IIT Bombay. He has authored or co-authored over 250 archival publications, authored or edited nine books and given numerous invited presentations at national and international conferences. The textbook “Systematic Methods of Chemical Process Design,” co-authored with Ignacio Grossmann and Art Westerberg, is a landmark in process systems engineering education. Larry’s latest book “Nonlinear Programming: Concepts, Algorithms and Applications to Chemical Processes.” issued in 2010.

Research Interests

Professor Biegler's research projects are in the areas of design research and systems analysis. His research centers around the development and application of concepts in optimization theory, operations research, and numerical methods for process design, analysis, and control. Topics in this area include:

Advanced algorithms for flowsheet simulation, optimization, and sensitivity analysis.
These include the development of methods using iterated linear programming and decomposition for nonlinear programming.

Development of large-scale nonlinear programming methods for optimization of systems of differential and algebraic equations.
Projects include analysis of stability and accuracy for approximate ODE solutions, algorithms for optimal control problems, process control, and methods for large-scale nonlinear programming.

Optimization methods for data-handling problems.
These include parameter estimation and data reconciliation problems for steady and dynamic problems.

Synthesis of reactor-based flowsheets through quantitative targets.
This approach combines optimization formulations with attainable region and pinch concepts.

Highlights

  • Larry gave short courses on dynamic optimization in China, Finland, Colombia and Germany and started new research activities with colleagues in all of these countries. In addition to receiving the INFORMS Computing Prize and the AIChE Lewis Award in 2009, Larry spent part of the fall semester as the Hougen Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he completed a 400-page textbook entitled Nonlinear Programming: Concepts, Algorithms and Applications to Chemical Processes.

  • Basic optimization algorithm development for large-scale, structured models and treatment of discrete decisions through mixed integer programming and complementarity formulations was a major effort of 2009 and has been demonstrated on difficult nonlinear systems with over a million variables. The work was supported by collaboration with IBM on the development of MINLP tools, further software development with a visitor from Zhejiang University and extension to deal with a number of engineering applications. These accomplishments were recognized by the INFORMS Computing Prize.

  • Optimization of dynamic systems with applications in parameter estimation, batch processing and polymer systems has been realized for the manufacture of polyethylene (major commodity product), model development for polystyrene copolymers (specialty product) and batch reactor systems. These efforts are supported by strong industrial collaborations (ExxonMobil, NOVA Chemicals, Dow Chemicals). The development of large-scale optimization strategies for complex nonlinear dynamic system was recognized by the Warren Lewis Award given by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

  • Fast on-line optimization strategies for Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) has advanced this year through major theoretical developments in NMPC stability and robustness. This extremely efficient on-line optimization approach is based on NLP sensitivity and leverages our large-scale optimization algorithms and software. Moreover, it offers all of the benefits of on-line optimization by solving these problems in background and not on-line. The reduction of on-line computational costs is 2-3 orders of magnitude and this has been demonstrated on large-scale polymer processes and distillation systems. In addition, these approaches have been developed and extended to state estimation and systems identification problems using a fast form of Moving Horizon Estimation. These advances were recognized by a plenary speaker invitation at the Process Systems Engineering 2009 conference in Salvador, Brazil.

  • Hierarchy of optimization models for energy systems has received strong development in collaboration with the National Energy Technology Laboratory (IAES/NETL) this year. Larry has explored optimization strategies for major components of the FutureGen Power Plant flowsheet, including combustor/gasifier computational fluid dynamic models, cyclic steady state models that require semi-closed DAE solvers and open equation-based models for air separation units and PEM fuel cells. The resulting optimization models are demonstrated to be much faster and more effective than state-of-the-art software. As shown in a recent paper, current applications of these optimization results are leading to economically and environmentally superior design and operation of fossil-fuel power plants.

  • Advanced optimal separation systems for capture of greenhouse gases, including CO2 and CH4, can be performed cleanly and efficiently using pressure-swing adsorption (PSA) operations. On the other hand, these inherently stiff, highly nonlinear PDAE systems are difficult to model, expensive to calculate and remain without efficient, systematic optimization strategies. In collaboration with NETL and TU Dresden Larry has developed efficient approaches for particularly large-scale PSA systems. These are based on fundamental advances in large-scale optimization algorithms, automatic differentiation for DAE systems and reduced order modeling for PDAE systems. This optimization approach provides significant economic and environmental benefits for CO2 capture and will lead to significant advances in the recovery of greenhouse gases from chemical plants, refineries and power plants.
