Biography
Dr. Myung S. Jhon is a Professor of Chemical Engineering, a member of the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) and the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Professor Jhon received his B.S. in Physics from Seoul National University, Korea, and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Chicago. He has served as visiting professor in several institutions, including the U.S. Department of Energy (National Energy Technology Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories); the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley; IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose; and the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. He has also served as a consultant to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. During his recent leave of absence from Carnegie Mellon, he served as the President and CEO of Doosan DND Co., Ltd. Professor Jhon is internationally known for his work in the fields of computational science, information storage systems, nanotechnology, organic light-emitting devices, and chemical mechanical polishing. He is a Fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. He has served as an advisory committee member for a Korean national program for Tera-level nanodevices, as well as the chair of advisory board and a lead organizer of the U.S.-Korea Nanotechnology Forum (http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/org/nanotechnology-forum). He is an international advisory board member for both the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry and Polymer (Korea). Prof. Jhon is also dedicated to the educational process, as is evident from his numerous teaching awards and his role as an ABET evaluator (Akron, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Rochester, Tufts, Stanford Connecticut, and Tennessee Tech), and Carnegie Institute of Technology Faculty Chair & undergraduate chair in his department. Currently, he is completing an undergraduate textbook entitled Principles of Fluid Mechanics, part of which is published on the Carnegie Mellon website.

Research Interests
Nanotechnology, data storage systems, polymer and suspension rheology, computational fluid mechanics, molecular simulation, computational energy science, equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, tribology, interfacial dynamics, nanocomposites, fuel cells, turbulent drag reduction, chemical mechanical planarization and display technology
Professor Jhon's research focuses on the fundamentals in engineering science and their application to the state-of-the-art engineering problems. He is primarily involved with the mathematical modeling of complex engineering systems using finite element, Monte Carlo, and molecular dynamics simulations. In addition, lattice Boltzmann method is currently being implemented via parallel computing schemes to examine multi-scale and multi-phenomena complex engineering systems.
He has also synthesized and characterized many different polymeric systems including polyaniline to make electrorheological (ER) fluids, consisting of a suspension of micron-sized particles in a non-conducting fluid, which plays an important role in electro-mechanical control devices. He constructed a universal scaling function for the ER yield stress, over a broad range of electrical field strengths, by hybridizing both the polarization and conductivity models. He also examined rheological properties of complex fluid systems including perfluoropolyethers, polymer/clay nanocomposites, and polymer/carbon nanotube composites.
Professor Jhon is investigating mechanical and reliability issues in information storage devices at the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC). Mathematical software suitable for designing next-generation drives, including heat assisted magnetic recording, is being developed in collaboration with industrial partners at the DSSC. Transport processes of lubricant film in nanoscale confined geometries are being examined. Experimental and theoretical investigations in nanotribology, nanorheology, and microstructural analysis are also under way. In conjunction with the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES), he is pioneering the modeling of nanoscale devices which is extremely important in electronics packaging area and next generation silicon-on-insulator transistors as well as the design of the direct methanol and hydrogen fuel cells. He is also exploring the manufacturing and development of deposition equipment for organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), which is one of the rapidly growing display technologies as well as chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) equipment, which is extensively used in semiconductor devices manufacturing industry. He has been hybridizing these technologies via virtues of nanotechnology, which will have a great impact in nanomanufacturing area.

Highlights
Extensively participated in nanotechnology research, education, and policy making. Prof. Jhon has been an advisory committee member (with M. Roco, NSF) for the National Program for Tera-level Nanodevices in Korea for the past nine years (2000 – present). He also served as the Chair of advisory board and as a lead organizer of the U.S.-Korea Nanotechnology Forum (2003 – present, (http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/org/nanotechnology-forum/). In 2009, he organized the sixth Forum, which dealt with nanoelectronics and its integration with application. This year Prof. Jhon is organizing the seventh Forum on nanomaterials and systems for nano-energy.
Served as an evaluator for the ABET Visit Team at Stevens Institute of Technology during 2009.
Worked in the World Class Research-Oriented University (WCU) program administrated by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology of Korea and has been developing new courses on “holistic strategy of multi-scale simulation and system integration” as well as “special topics on nano and fusion technology.”
Developed new research projects via WCU program on nano-convergent technologies that are critically important to human interface systems (e.g., silicon-based flexible display, light-emitting devices, and sensors). In addition, he is involved with the policies on nanotechnologies, green energy, and re-manufacturing areas.
