Outreach Programs
Our faculty is involved in a number of annual programs that reach out to K-12 students and the
public to promote careers in engineering and science. Approximately 1500 students participate
annually in these activities. A summary of the programs is given below. Websites are included
for additional information and reference.
National Chemistry Week Celebration, Carnegie Science Center, presented
hands-on experiments to students and the public, October or November , 1999-2004, 2006, 2007.

students at Fairview Elementary School, Fox Chapel School District, June 1994,
1997-2003, 2005, 2007.
Forensic Science
A number of kits are available for loan to middle and high school teachers in our region to
present experimental forensic science activities in the classroom. They are designed as an
investigative experience to use science as a tool to solve crimes. Please contact Rosemary
Frollini at rf3n@andrew.cmu.edu for more information.
Forensic science activities were provided to the Click! Summer Program
for girls offered by the Girls Math and Science Partnership at the Carnegie Science Center.

The Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS)
This is a 6 week laboratory chemical engineering program. Students design and carry out experiments to
produce a product or study a process in order to learn and provide experience with chemical engineering
concepts in the undergraduate chemical engineering labs in Doherty Hall on our campus. Participants are
juniors and seniors in high school from many locations in the US.
