A wide variety of modern laboratories are available to meet the requirements of a broad range of experimental and computational research. Specialized items can be constructed rapidly at the department machine shop, at Mellon Institute, as well as at several Pittsburgh industrial firms. Other university shops can provide electrical, metal, carpentry and glassblowing services. The department houses specialized equipment for measurement, recording and analysis. Special laboratories are equipped for research in polymeric materials, diffusion and coagulation, fluid mechanics and transport phenomena, chemical vapor deposition and surface chemistry and catalysis. Engineering library facilities are excellent, both on campus and in the city.

The Department of Chemical Engineering occupies approximately 37,000 square feet of space in Doherty Hall. Additional facilities are maintained in Roberts Engineering Hall and the in the Pittsburgh Technology Center. The labs house state-of-the-art equipment for experimentation in many fields and high performance computing. Doherty Hall is scheduled to undergo a $24M renovation beginning in 2006 that will transform the research infrastructure into a state-of-the-art facility.
