Dear Alumni:
The year 2001 has been marked by the tragic events that took place on September 11. This has left a deep impression on all of us. We will never forget when we first found out about these attacks. To our knowledge, none of our alumni lost their lives. We have carried on with our daily activities and have tried to excel in what we do, which I believe is the best way to respond to terrorism.
We are very pleased to report that in June we reached the $1 million goal for the Chemical Engineering Campaign. We are most grateful to our alumni, and in appreciation we have published the names of those who have been so kind in their support. The campaign has allowed us to establish the endowed Chemical Engineering Alumni Scholarship Fund (about $450,000) which since last year we have awarded to top sophomore students. The campaign has also allowed us to establish endowed Graduate Fellowships, (also about $450,000) which have been assigned to top students in the department. The remaining funds we have used to support our young faculty and for buying equipment in the Rothfus Lab.
While the campaign has been a great boost for the department, we now have the highest cost of graduate students in the country. Also, we face increased pressure to cover our educational expenses, particularly for the Rothfus Lab and the Computational Lab. We hope that you will continue to provide us with generous support and will respond accordingly to a recent mailing by our Development Office. We also enclose a card in this newsletter for your convenience.
You will be pleased to know that our faculty continue to receive prestigious recognitions. Professor Lee White has received the Thomas Baron Award of AIChE, Larry Biegler received the McAfee Award, David Sholl has received an Alfred Sloan Fellowship, and Jim Schneider and Lynn Walker received NSF Career Awards. The department also fared extremely well in the accreditation of our undergraduate program by ABET. Our evaluator, Professor Jack Hudson from the University of Virginia, was highly impressed by the quality of our students and faculty, and by the effectiveness of our program. We were also very pleased to have two truly outstanding lectures this year. Professor Bob Langer from MIT gave the Distinguished Research Lecture in the spring, and Dr. Al Lopez, Vice President of R&D at ExxonMobil gave the Toor Lecture in the fall. We also had this year the first Jerry Seiner Memorial Lecture that was delivered by Ken Niederst from PPG. After the lecture we had the dedication of the new PPG Industries CPS Lab. Annette Jacobson and Rosemary Frollini were instrumental in the renovation of these labs. We are also most grateful to PPG, and in particular to Kears Pollock, for their financial support.
I hope that you will enjoy reading the newsletter. You will find a section on indicators of excellence that we are very proud of. We have also featured a number of our distinguished alumni. I very much hope you will be in touch with Carnegie Mellon and especially the Chemical Engineering Department.
Ignacio E. Grossmann
John L. Anderson, dean of the College of Engineering, gave the
annual Stanley Katz Memorial Lecture at the City College of New York on April
2. Anderson's lecture was titled,

Gary Powers received the Kun Li Award for Excellence in Education at the 2001 Commencement ceremony.
David Sholl has been named a 2001 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. This award is given by the Sloan Foundation to "enhance the careers of the very best young faculty members in specified fields of science." Currently 100 grants are awarded annually in six fields: chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics. David is also the recipient of the Ladd Award, which CIT gives annually in recognition of outstanding research and professional accomplishments and potential.
Congratuations to David Sholl and his wife Connie on the birth of their son, Martin David Sholl who
was born October 17, 2001. Martin
joins big brother Kevin, 4 and sister Rachel, 2.
Bob Tilton is in his second year of a three-year term as the Chair of the Victor K.
LaMer Award Committee of the ACS Division of Colloid and Surface
Chemistry. This committee has the task
of selecting the winner of the most outstanding graduate research at a North
American university. CMU' s Chemical
Engineering Department alone has more past winners of this award than any other
university.
We are happy to announce the birth of Aaron Daymond Tilton. Aaron was born on Friday, May 25. Julie and Aaron are doing great. Congratulations to Bob & Julie and big brother Ian!
Lynn Walker and Jim Schneider have been selected as recipients of a 2001 NSF CAREER Award, which is highly competitive, and one of the most prestigious awards for a young faculty member. The research of Professor Schneider is in the area of bioseparations, drug/gene delivery, and probe microscopy. The research of Professor Walker is in the area of quantifying the coupling between flow behavior and flow-induced microstructures in complex plants.
Lee White was selected for the Thomas Baron Award in Fluid-Particle Systems. This award "recognizes an individual's outstanding scientific/technical accomplishment which has made a significant impact in the fluid-particle systems or in a related field with potential for cross-fertilization." This award is given by the Particle Technology Forum of AIChE.
Welcome to the Advisory Board the new members of the Chemical Engineering Advisory Board. We would like to welcome Professor Bob Armstrong, Head of Chemical Engineering at MIT; Dr. Al Lopez, Vice-President of R&D at ExxonMobil; Scott Whalen (ChE 81), Director of Product Development at Procter & Gamble; and Achim Noack, Senior Vice-President of Engineering at Bayer Corporation.
Robert Armstrong Alfredo Lopez Scott Whalen Achim Noack
We would like to thank Professor Larry Duda from Penn State and Dr. Jim Ebel (ChE 86’) for their past participation in the board.
The Center for Complex Fluids Engineering hosted the 75th American Chemical Society Colloid and Surface Science Symposium, June 10-13, 2001, bringing 569 international scientists and engineers to the Carnegie Mellon campus. This annual symposium is the premier conference in this important field that serves a wide variety of technologies, from pharmaceuticals and drug delivery devices to “genetic labs on a chip,” high definition display technologies, and future nanotechnologies. The Symposium was co-chaired by Chemical Engineering Professor Bob Tilton and Physics Professor Steve Garoff. This was an outstanding multidisciplinary team effort. Individual technical symposia were organized by Chemical Engineering Professors Lynn Walker, Andy Gellman, Jim Schneider, David Sholl, Lee White, Dennis Prieve, and researcher Ana Morfesis. CMU faculty from other departments organized symposia as well, including Bob Suter (Physics), Fred Lanni (Biological Sciences) and David Dzombak (Civil and Environmental Engineering). Alumni and friends from fifteen other universities helped us as technical symposium organizers as well. Annette Jacobson and Rosemary Frollini organized the Symposium Banquet and an Open House of the CPS Lab.
We can be particularly proud of
our graduate and undergraduate students who volunteered as session aides and
were widely praised for their professionalism.
By all accounts, the 75th Colloid and Surface Science
Symposium was a tremendous success, the best ever according to some
visitors. http://www.cmu.edu/home/news/colloids.html
The CCFE will hold a short course on "Instrumental Methods of
Colloid, Interface and Complex Fluid Characterization" on the CMU campus
in January. The course is aimed at

Jerry Seiner Memorial
Lecture and PPG Industries Colloids, Polymers and Surfaces (CPS) Laboratory
Open House
The first annual lecture in memory of Jerome Seiner was held on May 15, 2001. Jerry Seiner was a member of the CPS Program Industrial Advisory Board for 25 years and provided advice and support for the program during that time. The lecture was given by Ken Niederst of PPG Industries, a colleague and friend of Jerry Seiner and was sponsored by a grant established by the Seiner family in Jerry’s honor. The lecture was entitled “Gas Barrier Coatings”. Also on the program were CIT Dean John Anderson, Carnegie Mellon Trustee Kears Pollock, and David Seiner, Jerry’s son, who highlighted Jerry’s important contributions to the University, PPG, and his family. Attendees included the Seiner family and friends, PPG Industries employees, and students and faculty from Carnegie Mellon.
The lecture was followed by a reception and Open House to celebrate the dedication of the new PPG Industries CPS Lab in Doherty Hall. The lab space was renovated during the last year and new equipment was purchased, thanks to a generous grant from the PPG Industries Foundation. More than 100 people attended the event, including Jeff Gilbert and Sue Sloan of PPG Industries Foundation and Kears Pollock, Retired Executive Vice President of PPG and member of the Chemical Engineering Advisory Board.
Donation to the Computational Lab
Mr. James Meade (ChE 50) has made
a generous donation of $20,000 to the department to upgrade and expand the
equipment (PCs, server, printer, project) in the Computational Lab. This
donation is most welcome as it impacts very positively our undergraduate
program.
Dr. H. William Prengle (ChE 49) was recently elected into the Royal
Society of Chemistry on August 1, 2001.

Dr. Floudas is Professor of Chemical Engineering at Princeton University, Associated Faculty in Program of Computational and Applied Mathematics, and Associated Faculty in the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering. He earned his B.S.E. in 1982 at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, completed his Ph.D. in December 1985 at Carnegie Mellon University (Advisor: Ignacio Grossmann), and joined Princeton University in February 1986.
Professor Floudas is a world-renown authority in mathematical modeling and optimization of complex systems at the macroscopic and microscopic level. His research interests lie at the interface of chemical engineering, applied mathematics, and operations research, with principal areas of focus including chemical process synthesis and design, process control and operations, discrete-continuous nonlinear optimization, local and global optimization, ad computational chemistry and molecular biology. Professor Floudas is the author of two graduate textbooks, Nonlinear Mixed-Integer Optimization (Oxford University Press, 1995), and Deterministic Global Optimization (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2000). He has co-edited six monographs/books, has over 160 refereed publications, and has delivered over 240 invited lectures and seminars. He is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching and research that include the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, 1988; and the 2001 AIChE Professional Progress Award in Chemical Engineering.
Len is a member of Shell Chemicals global corporate strategy and planning team. This team developed the strategic analysis and outlook for upper management to decide to restructure the Shell Chemicals portfolio to its petrochemical roots in 1999. Also, Len has responsibility for the Global Planning process and development of the Americas Regional plan for Shell Chemicals.
Len began his career at Shell in 1985 at Westhollow Research Center in Houston in the Corporate Chemical Engineering Division. In this role, he was responsible for chemical process simulation and fundamental research in transport in polymers. The polymer work led to several publications and technical symposium in the application of transport fundamentals to plastic food packaging applications. Len also holds several patents in the area of transport in polymers.
Management positions in Epoxy Resins Research, Economics and Scheduling at Shell’s Geismar LA plant and Supply Chain in Shell’s Higher Olefins and Derivatives business have followed.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon (Advisor: Rakesh Jain), all in chemical engineering.
Most people who earn a PhD choose academic careers. Not Rebecca Liebert (PhD, Chem E, 1995; Advisor: Dennis Prieve). Liebert has been on a fast track at NOVA Chemicals, Inc., a leading maker of polymers. In five years she has worked in technology, new product development, mergers and acquisitions, and sales. “I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of sides of the business,” she understates.
At
NOVA’s U.S. base in Pittsburgh, she is now Commercial Leader for Styrenic
Polymers, a newly created post in a key division. Many items that have plastic parts or cases—home appliances,
tools, pumps—are made with styrenic polymers sold by NOVA. Liebert manages strategic sales areas like
pricing, contracts and, ultimately, deciding what product mix to sell for
optimum return.
Her
Ph.D helps Liebert grasp the technologies behind making the product—important
for a sense of how costs (and thus margins) can be influenced—and the whole
package, she says, “gives me a leg up on my peers. Going to Carnegie Mellon was
the best decision I ever made.”
Liebert
earned her B.S. at the University of Kentucky, then went straight into PhD
studies. She serves CIT on the Dean’s
Leadership Council, a group of recent graduates who advise the school on
curriculum, alumni relations and industrial relations.
Kears Pollock is former executive vice-president, Office of the Chief Executive, of PPG Industries, Inc. He is a University Trustee and co-chair of the Chemical Engineering Advisory Board.
He served as senior vice president, Coatings and Resins; vice-president, Automotive Products, Coatings and Resins; and director of Marketing. Prior to that, he was director of Research and Development, Glass and Glass Patent Counsel. He was a patent attorney and research engineer before these assignments.
He is a member of the American ad Allegheny County Bar Associations, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Society of Automotive Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He has also served on the advisory board of the Pittsburgh Regional Center for Science Teachers and has been president of the Hampton Township, PA school board.
He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon and a law degree from Duquesne University. He is a member of the bar of Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court, and various federal courts and agencies and is a registered professional engineer.
William Pounds
Dr. William F. Pounds is an Emeritus Professor and Dean of the Sloan School of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1950 and joined Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York, as an industrial engineer. After service as a naval aviator he returned to Carnegie Mellon for graduate studies where he received a Master’s Degree in mathematical economics in 1959 and his Ph.D. in 1964 with Professor Herb Simon.
Dr. Pounds was a member of the M.I.T. faculty from 1961 to 1998. He served as Dean of the Sloan School from 1966 to 1980. In 1981 he stepped down as Dean and resumed his professional duties on a part-time basis while also serving as Senior Advisor to the Rockefeller Family. In 1991 Dr. Pounds retired from his various Rockefeller responsibilities and returned to M.I.T. faculty on a full-time basis. He retired from M.I.T. in 1998.
Dr. Pounds played a prominent role in developing the Sloan School’s International programs and was responsible for a time for coordinating all the international commitments of M.I.T. Prior to his service as Dean, Dr. Pounds’ teaching and research concentrated on the quantitative methods of managerial analysis, on the problems of operations management, and on the theory of decision making. He was instrumental in developing the operations management curriculum in the Sloan School.
Dr. Pounds is married to the former Helen Means. They have two children, four grandchildren, and reside in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Lynn
Yanyo is the Manager of Sales and Marketing for the Materials Division of Lord
Corporation. Since joining Corporate Research
at Lord in 1981, her research work has included developing ceramic coatings
through sol-gel processes, identifying mechanisms adhesive failure, authoring
predictive design software for rubber injection mold design, developing
alternative elastomeric materials for extreme applications, developing
mathematical models to predict non-linear, dynamic mechanical properties of
elastomers, and developing controllable "smart" materials and
applications. With the creation of the
new Materials Division of Lord Corporation in 1996, she managed the long term
R&D in electrically and magnetically controllable materials development, as
well as product and process development and manufacturing of magnetorheological
(MR) fluids. Since 1998 she has been

includes market research and often market creation and development for MR fluid
technology.
She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon
University in Chemical Engineering. In
her early years at Lord, she also completed a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and
Engineering at the University of Akron.
Christopher W. Macosko, alumnus of Carnegie Mellon (BS Chemical Engineering, 1966) professor, department of chemical engineering and materials science, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was cited for the invention, development, and dissemination of new methods of reactive polymer processing and rheological property measurement.

Exchange
Program
James Leung
My experience abroad in London places the exchange
program as the best opportunity the chemical engineering department can offer
for its undergraduate students.
This opportunity offers you to study in the world-renowned Imperial College, currently ranked second in the UK after Cambridge, and convenient access to explore the rest of Europe. Imperial College gives a hands-on approach to learning. Textbooks were used only for reference. Instead, all the concepts, theories, and problems you need to know, for example, in separation processes, is from lecture notes prepared by a professor experienced in this field. Most of the learning happens when I am wearing my lab coat and hardhat playing with separation tank valves and analyzing experimental data in the department’s four-story high pilot plant. The same approach goes for the other courses.
Thinking about medical school? Imperial College has a medical school where students enroll in a six-year program to become full time doctors. There is also a newly upgraded biomedical engineering department. Experience in this field is hot in the marketplace. You are welcomed to take courses in these schools.
The most rewarding feature of this program is simply the availability of time. Europe is very laid back. I had the time to live a life that otherwise would be impossible to have in CMU. Imperial College reserves Wednesday afternoon for relaxation, recreation, or if necessary a time to catch up with your work. Work is well-balanced with play.
London on it own is worth a visit. To make your experience even better you will live there. I did not find myself as a tourist but as a full time college student doing what college students would do London. Use your imagination. Chances are I have done it not just once but a few times. Ever since I got on the plane to London at the start my fall semester last year I did not come back until a week before the fall semester started this year.
With just a few weeks back into the States I am already planning my next trip back. Living in a different country can be a challenge, just ask any international students. This program is definitely worth more than that.
James Tseng, one of our PISCES students, won the "Co-Op of the Semester" Award at AMD this semester. He is going to continue his internship in the fall in a wafer fab support position.
