Prospective Students - FAQ

I am a foreign student (from a non-English-speaking country), but I have a degree from an institution in an English-speaking country.  Do I still need to take the TOEFL?

We do require the TOEFL for all students from non-English speaking countries.  In special circumstances, the Director of Graduate Admissions may grant a waiver of the TOEFL requirement, but this must be requested in advance of the admissions deadline.

I am an undergraduate in Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon, and I wish to apply to the M.ChE program.  Do I need to get letters of reference and take the GRE?

The requirements for admission to the M.ChE program are the same for all applicants, including current CMU students.  In special cases, a waiver of some of some of these requirements may be granted by the Director of Graduate Admissions, but this must be requested in advance of the admissions deadline.

I have B.S. degree in Chemistry.  I am eligible to apply to the Chemical Engineering graduate program?

We do accept applications from candidates holding degrees in fields related to Chemical Engineering, including Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Bioengineering.  To be competitive, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in math, and preferably have some engineering-related coursework completed.

What are the chances I’ll be accepted into the Ph.D program?

As a matter of policy, we do not pre-screen or otherwise evaluate applications prior to the application deadline.  You need to apply and await our decision.

When will my application be evaluated? When will I hear what my final status is?

We examine all applications within the first 10 days following the application deadline.  In some cases, we elect not to make a final decision until later in the process.  Keep in mind that you can always check application status using our on-line application system.

Is funding available for the M.S. or M.ChE degree?

No.  We do not provide funding of any kind for those degrees.

Will the Ph.D degree be funded? Is there a teaching requirement to obtain funding?

All of our Ph.D students are fully funded, with a stipend provided for living expenses, unless applicants have their own external funding.  We do require that all Ph.D students serve as teaching assistants, but it is not for funding purposes.

How can I request a copy of the department research brochure?

We’re happy to send you a copy.  Please contact the Graduate Recruiting Office or e-mail us here.
