Placement of PhD Graduates
PhD graduates are hired into research positions in many different industrial sectors and into academic positions at Universities around the world. The salary range for PhD graduates in 2006 was $75,000 to $100,000 with an average of $85,700.
Over the past few years an increasing number of our PhD graduates have pursued academic careers. In fact Caltech’s website lists Carnegie Mellon’s Chemical Engineering program as tied for fourth among departments putting PhD graduates into top-10 chemical engineering programs. Many graduates interested in academic careers have applied for and accepted positions before finishing their PhDs, but often take 1-2 year postdoctoral positions in order to expand their research experience before taking those positions.
